park afternoon parks and playgrounds generic

Charlie Daniels Park is the closest thing Mt. Juliet has to a self-contained outdoor recreation center. Between the 9,000-square-foot fenced playground, the splash pad, the skate park, the four tennis courts, the pickleball and sand volleyball and gaga ball, and the one-mile walking track that connects to the Cedar Creek Greenway, it packs more amenities into one property than most Middle Tennessee municipal parks.

Named after the late country-music legend who made Mt. Juliet his home for decades, the park sits off Charlie Daniels Parkway a few minutes north of Providence Marketplace and functions as the de facto community hub for the city.

Planet Playground and Ava's Splash Pad

Planet Playground is a 9,000-square-foot fenced playground — the fencing matters as much as the equipment. Parents of toddlers and young kids can actually sit down without tracking runners. Multiple play zones for ages roughly 2 through 12.

Squirrel's Run is a separate, smaller toddler area with a concrete tricycle track. Parents of kids under 4 use this as the primary zone.

Ava's Splash Pad is free and seasonal (warm months only). Summer weekend mornings it fills fast — go on a weekday if you want room to breathe. Zero-depth, no standing water, age skew 2–8.

Sports Courts and Athletic Fields

  • Four tennis courts — often the most heavily used; leagues and lessons fill organized slots
  • Two pickleball courts — busy; check Mt. Juliet Parks & Rec for open-play hours
  • Two sand volleyball courts — often empty on weekdays
  • Full-court outdoor basketball — pickup games evenings and weekends
  • Gaga ball pit — kids' consistent favorite

Athletic fields (soccer, baseball, softball) are primarily programmed through league schedules but often open for family use when leagues aren't running.

The One-Mile Walking Track

A paved one-mile loop connecting to the Cedar Creek Greenway. Stroller-friendly. Flat. Shaded in sections. You can start on the park loop, detour onto the greenway, and extend your walk or run by 2–6+ miles without moving the car.

The Mt. Juliet Community Center

On-site, hosting fitness classes, dance lessons, community meetings, and youth and senior programming. Check Mt. Juliet Parks & Recreation for current calendar.

Pavilions and Events

Five pavilions and a gazebo available for rental year-round. The amphitheater hosts outdoor concerts and seasonal events. The park hosts the city's major community events — Independence Day, fall festivals, Christmas celebrations.

Best Times to Visit

Weekday mornings (7–10 a.m.) are the quietest window. Weekday afternoons (3–6 p.m.) fill fast after school. Summer weekends: Ava's Splash Pad is packed — arrive before 11 a.m. or after 5 p.m. Fall and spring weekends spread foot traffic more evenly.

A Local's Take

Most Mt. Juliet households end up with at least one member at Charlie Daniels Park more days than not — kids at the playground, a parent on the walking track, or a weekly pickleball group. The density of amenities is unusual for a city Mt. Juliet's size. When comparing Mt. Juliet against another Middle Tennessee suburb, this park is often the deciding amenity — not because it's dramatic, but because it works, reliably and free.
